Whoever said she wasn’t?? RiRi proves 101% she is in her new fashion shoot video Rockstar 101. The looks in the clip are just too fierce to be true and prove ultimately Rihanna is a pop queen in the world where video has well and truly buried the radio star. Although the song is wishy-washy and a bit whiny too, the video is an orgasmic fashion experience and a total look book for rock chick hookers like us here at HBAFH. A highlight you’ll hear a lot about (the Daily Mail call it “raunchy”) is the princess herself gyrating the floor in nowt but chain bodice and leggings custom-made for the shoot by London-based Swedish designer Fannie Schiavoni. We love it because she’s also got an amazing spiky headpiece and because she’s blacked up despite actually being black – if Tyra and Carine can do it, right??
Other fabulous looks to look for: the military hat, shoulderd white jacket and leopard print pants gives a big old middle finger to Cheryl’s red-jacketed attempt at a Balmainesque rock royalty officer look. The bit with the fringed leather waistcoat and studded boots hits glamourous folk-rock notes, but she keeps it sexy with lots of bare skin and uses the mic wires as a kind of electro bondage motif wrapping them round her limbs. All the while she poses with her boy backups that include bona fide rock star (and general hot cookie) Blink drummer Travis Barker. A fabulous moment too is when she smears her eyeliner down her face with one hand. The accessories are killer; there’s the netted face, the big silver hardwear jewellery, Madge style laced gloves and some fabulous leggings with laces going right up her legs.
Latex makes an appearence in the form of a catsuit worn with bob wig (so slick and feminine versus the famed mohawk) framed with a puffed collar and neatly balanced with oh-so-nineties kitten heels/pointed toe shoes. The stripes are a bit odd, but that aside, here she looks completely different – almost like Kate Moss or Lily Allen when they have a thick fringe and heavy kohl. In each outfit she really manages to bring out a different character of herself. But the best look? The bejewelled, be-chained backless leotard she wears with the huge tribal helmet of enormous spikes; it is fierce-and-fucking-fabulous in a high fashion, animalistic meets artistic way. We love the military rock thing, the folk-rock thing, the chick-rock thing, but that animal/tribal one hits the G-spot; the buffalo skull and feather thing brings a touch of theatrical drama to the idea zebra print and claw rings can only hint at. And headpieces are definitely the future.
The least fave? (We can’t quite say worst) would be the bit where she dresses up as record contributor Slash, replete with curly wig and round sunnies, but keeping it RiRi-sexy in fishnet stockings – doesn’t it just feel a bit much? Maybe its just because she actually makes a very convincing male rocker and you’re sort of a bit surprised it isn’t really him. The black and white choice for the video makes total sense and we love when videos are slick but simple like this one. The record may be slightly repetitive but perhaps it’ll be a grower, like that Slash outfit, or at least get itself a decent remix. Well done bbz! You did us proud. Apparently the next one (for single Te Amo) was shot at a chateau on the outskirts of Paris. We have just a wee feeling it’ll be a bit more girly – more’s the pity!
